I love wedding albums. The nostalgia of being able to re-live your wedding day through an artistically designed, professionally printed and hand-crafted album is second to none. In a digital age where pictures are most often consumed on social media, e-mail, blogs, and other electronic formats, there has never been a better time to appreciate the quietness and intimacy of a printed piece.
Our couples receive the highest quality of wedding albums available to professional photographers. I am a perfectionist and therefore my standards for quality are extremely high. I have inspected almost every professional lab, have found the best of the best, and I have been a loyal customer to my current album supplier for 7 years now.
Modern wedding albums do away with traditional slip-in matted prints that we may remember from our parents’ wedding. We have all seen a matted album from 20 or 30 years ago that have edges torn and images falling out of place, and so the new “flush mount” style of wedding album has since replaced it in most photography studios. The flush mount albums that I offer are still leather-bound, hand-crafted pieces of art, but the plus is that the images are printed directly onto the thick pages and go right to the edge. The benefits are:
- Every album is custom laid out instead of using template mattes
- We can fit more images per page
- We can design full-spread images that go across two pages
- We can have the images bleed right to the edge of the album page.
They’re simply gorgeous, and guaranteed to last a longer period of time without fraying, tearing or bending because of their thicker pages.
There is still something classic about matted wedding albums though, and for the longest time the options were limited. As I mentioned, you traditionally would have to choose from a template of mattes such as two 5×7 openings, one 8×10 opening, four 2×2 openings, and so on. Up until now. My album supplier – one of the finest in the industry – has recently launched a new “hybrid” wedding album that marries the classic tradition of matted albums with the flexibility and wow-factor of full-spread modern flush mount albums.
I was honoured to be one of the select few photographers who was given early access to this new style of album to test it out and order a sample. When I received it last week, I was blown away, and knew that it was definitely going to have a home in my studio for future brides and grooms who demanded something truly unique yet still classic.
As you can see in the images, the album is a hybrid of matted pages and flush mount pages and when designing, I have flexibility to choose a matted page or a flush mount full-bleed page (or a combination of the two) based on the story I am trying to tell. The best part is that I can design the matted pages exactly how I want without having to use a template. My album supplier will then custom-create the matte for me based on my design and my image selection. The mattes are mounted so you will not have the tearing, fraying or bending that traditional matted albums suffered from.
The end product is nothing short of breathtaking. The best way to appreciate it is to see it in person. The second best way? Pictures, of course! And so that is why I wanted to share a few close-up images here to show you the possibility.
Enjoy, and I look forward to showing you this album in person!
